The Royal Treatment

Apr. 25th, 2011 | 03:53 pm

So, the week of the Royal Wedding begins. I'm not a huge "royal" watcher, but I do remember the day William's birth announcement came on over the radio, there was a frenzied level of excitement. I hope that these two can have something of a "normal" life and that if nothing else, Diana's wish that her sons know what "reality" is, has been fulfilled. Both boys have careers that they seem to enjoy. (William with the Royal Airforce Search and Rescue Team, and Harry, a Captain in the military.)

William and Kate are currently renting a farmhouse on the island of Anglesey, where they frequent grocery stores and local pubs, a far cry from "royal" life. Apparently they have no plans/desire to move (good for them) instead, enjoying the quiet life and the protection that the "locals" offer, in helping them to maintain their privacy.

Let's hope the press lets them be. The last thing this family needs is another car plowing into a tunnel pillar as it races into the night, trying to avoid the paparazzi. I've half expected to hear William say "You killed my mother with your aggression, you won't kill my future wife." But I'm guessing the royal blood runs a little too thick for him to be that blunt.

The ashtrays with their faces on the bottom are in incredibly poor taste (did they not get the memo that smoking is not something that they should be encouraging?)  and the snub of Sarah Ferguson was unnecessary (inviting her daughters, but not her? Does he not remember that she was one of his mother's best friends?) Add to that that, some of his invited guests are outright terrorists (Where was the veto on this?) and all in all, I think it's a bit of a fiasco, but at least it's only one day.

I really hope that these two can find long-term happiness in the face of adversity and have the "normal" life that Diana would have wanted for them because in the end, I think that's all she would have wanted. Two happy boys frolicking in the sun with their kids on a hot, summer afternoon. What better way to pay tribute to their Mum?
