Sometimes you just get a little help when you need it...

As you now know, Mom and I qualified for a three week Paris trip. Previously, I had gotten through to this station ONCE in six months and Mom, well, I think she got in about three times last year...

Fast-forward to this morning, the LAST day to qualify for the trip....I call in again saying "Come on Grandpa help me out again, improve our odds."

The phone rings. The D.J. answers, I get the answer wrong. I'm so disappointed and a feel so bad because I know I blew a chance at doubling our chances...or did I?

Wait a minute, I KNOW that voice. MOM got in behind me and she knew the answer. Our odds have shot up to 1 in 10.5.

Mom and I never do well with draws, so I truly don't expect to win (although it would be all kinds of AWESOME) but here's the thing---I truly believe my grandfather offered a helping hand because I asked for it. He and I have been strongly connected since his death in different ways, so in that sense, I'm a believer. My Mom is a different story. Ever the practical one, she listens patiently while I go on about how I "spoke" to her Dad, or how he "showed" me something, and I know she doesn't believe a word of it. I'm okay with that, I get it, some people just can't wrap their heads around a "connection" with the "other side." But I tell you what, if he keeps pulling stuff like this, I may just make a believer of her yet! :-)

And a RAT she is...

My fellow blogger Jill reminded me that it is in fact, Chinese New Year. I must say, I'm a fan. All of the celebratory costumes/colours/traditions are all kinds of cool and in the spirit of the celebration, I must tell you that I'm a rat. A water rat in fact, which works for and against me. Apparently, I'm not afraid to boss you around for my own gain (read: strong leadership qualities, but isn't afraid to go after others for their own benefit) no worries, according to the chart, I don't do it in such a way as to lose your respect so that's good to know...I guess there's only one thing left to say to the horoscope wheel...TOUCHE.

The Rat

Being born a Rat is nothing to be ashamed of. In China, the Rat is respected and considered a courageous, enterprising person. It is deemed an honor to be born in the Year of the Rat and it is considered a privilege to be associated with a Rat. Rats know exactly where to find solutions and can take care of themselves and others without problems. They use their instinctive sense of observation to help others in times of need and are among the most fit of all the Animal signs to survive most any situation.

Years of the Rat
First in the cycle, Rat Years begin the sequence and recur every twelfth year. The Chinese New Year does not fall on a specific date, so it is essential to check the calendar to find the exact date on which each Rat year actually begins.

The Sign of the Rat
Being born under this sign determines many talents, as well as other characteristics that may not be so commendable. Rats are very lively and need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. They can be calm and perceptive, but sometimes their brains can cause a mental restlessness, tempting them to take on too much, only to discover they are unable to meet their commitments. Rats are blessed with one of the best intellects going. Add to their intelligence a curiosity and a bright imagination, and they seem as sharp as a needle.

The sign of the Rat is the first sign in the cycle giving Rat people exude great leadership qualities and are good at taking the lead. They don't mind a lot of responsibility and they demonstrate a strong presence that other people respect. For those with the Rat nature, status and monetary satisfaction are the greatest motivation.

RAT FACTS:
People born in the Year of the Rat share certain characteristics. The Rat sign is an abbreviated way of characterizing that individual's personality. Following are features associated with the sign of the Rat. First in order, Chinese name-SHU, sign of charm
Hour-11pm-12:59am Month-December
Western Counterpart-Sagittarius

CHARACTERISTICS
Smart, Magnetic, Well-liked, Affable, Quick-witted, Surreptitious, Selfish, Protective, Calculating

IN YOUR ELEMENT

The characteristics of the Rat Sign are tempered by one of the five Chinese elements of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth overlaying a 5-year cycle of characteristics on the original 12-year cycle.

THE METAL RAT 1900 AND 1960
Of all the Rats, these are the toughest and most resolute. They are visionary and possess an emotional intensity that can lead to feelings of rage, envy, or possessiveness. They like to be in charge, and can act selfishly to get what they want. In relationships, business or personal, they can be obstinate. Metal rats have to bear in mind that meeting their partner halfway would help their relationships tremendously. They take great pride in their homes and enjoy decorating them in their impressively good taste.

THE WATER RAT 1912 AND 1972
Being guided by the Water element means these Rats have a knack for influencing people. With their strong intellectual powers and great insight, they are also great puzzle solvers. They are quick to understand others and are incredibly practical people. Rats apply their talents to their everyday lives, making them obliging, generous and compassionate to other people. Generally, they are liked and respected by everyone. Like all Rats, however, they can be determined to seek their own gain, and will not mind using these talents to achieve it - though generally without losing anyone's respect in doing so.

THE WOOD RAT 1924 AND 1984

Despite having a remarkable facade of self-confidence, deep down, Wood Rats are the least sure of themselves compared to other Rats. However, they wouldn't dream of showing this side of themselves to anyone. Only close companions of a Wood Rat would ever suspect that he or she had such self-doubt. In fact Wood Rats are often worried about downfall, despite their ability to find success. Well-liked, proficient, and good leaders at work, Wood Rats seem to function best when they are surrounded by family and friends. Cordial and delicate, they are usually well loved by family, friends and peers.

THE FIRE RAT 1936 AND 1996

Fire adds a bit of spontaneity and vigor to the already spirited Rat. These Rats like change and travel and are eager to start new projects or to take trips to exotic places. Fire Rats are likely to change their occupations and residences more often than most, and essentially shun any kind of routine. They can be anxious and impulsive, but their zest for life is quite irresistible, and they have the Rat's ability to along so well with others. Compared to other Rats, Fire Rats are likely to be more charitable, autonomous, and energetic and the least self-controlled.

THE EARTH RAT 1948 AND 2008

The Earth adds solidity to the Rat's personality. An Earth Rat is conventional and a good achiever who likes to establish roots early in order to make a secure future for himself and his family. These Rats have the typical Rat ingenuity and mental capacity, but a strong sense of reality often alludes them preventing them from going after anything that could be impromptu. Earth Rats are honorable and love to be stabilized. Slowly and steadily acquiring wealth gives them a sense of inner peace. Although they are capable of being stingy with their finances, they do possess warm feelings for their family and friends.

Health and home

RAT HEALTH
The affect of the sign of the Rat is energetic, and demonstrates enough endurance to fight most any sickness. Yet, all Rats tend to be tense, full of nervous energy, petulant and prone to stress. Rats also harbor a bit of aggression; yet, they are usually able to control it. Yoga would benefit Rats by calming their aggressive natures and helping them manage stress.

AT HOME WITH THE RAT

Rats make good homemakers who are always willing to do household chores. Rats are not usually interested in keeping up with the times, and it doesn't matter to them whether or not their furnishings are in style. What does matter is that their home is a refuge expressing warmth, comfort and vogue. Light blue is their color of choice for home decor. Because this is a sign of acquisition, the Rat person's house is presumably bursting with various knick-knacks collected over the years. Most Rats are cheerful, domesticated individuals who find happiness at home with their family.

Career and finance
THE RAT ON THE JOB
The Chinese say others should always listen to the advice of the Rat. Because of their intellect and observatory powers, Rat people possess prudence and perception. They can anticipate problems, and are always able to see the big picture. They can hone in on issues at hand and make measurable judgments. These skills, combined with their sense of aspiration also make them clever operators. Status, money, title, and recognition are important to the Rat. They have keen senses of observation that allow them to foresee upcoming business opportunities as well as potential occupational problems. The Rat makes a better boss than an employee and, although motivated, they can be pinned down by routines. Rats work better in flexible situations where they can be freely creative.

MONEY AND THE RAT
Cunning and thrifty, Rats have a knack with money and are apt to save for rainy days. When capable, the Rat is a great money saver, and in strapped times he knows how to make something out of nothing or how to turn make things advantageous for himself. Although few Rats suffer financially, the Chinese have a proverb: They who pile up grain hoards have much to lose.

RAT CAREERS
Those born in the Year of the Rat also share the same kinds of goals and objectives in life. The occupations best suited for the Rat are listed below:

RATS MAKE EXCELLENT:
Writers, Broadcasters, Actors, Advisors, Counselors, Lawyers, Politicians, Designers, Engineers, Managers, Directors, Administrators, Entrepreneurs, Musicians, Stand-up Comedians, Researchers, Historians, Race Car Drivers

CONGENIAL BUSINESS PARTNERS
Whether Rats are compatible with their business partners depends on whether their signs are harmonious or antagonistic to those of their partners. Considering the congruity of their own characters and the characters of their business colleagues can also be very useful.

LIKES AND DISLIKES
Since Rats are born under the same Animal sign, they often share likes and dislikes. Following are similar likes and dislikes of the Rats personality:
Rats Like:
Color Preference: Light-Blue
Gems and Stones: Diamond, Amethyst, Garnet
Suitable Gifts: car accessories, art books, gym memberships, geographical maps
Hobbies and Pastimes: Interior design, playing basketball, crafts, painting
Rats' Dislike: Doing without things they want, strict time keeping, any routines, being at the end of the line

THE RAT VACATION
Travel delights the Rat personality and ignites his curiosity. Sunbathing is not the ideal way for a Rat to spend his vacation. Rats are adventurers. They want to explore, examine, visit and party during their time off. They want to try new foods, find new sights and experience the culture of the area they are visiting. And, of course, if they can come home with an exotic souvenir to add to their collection their vacation will have been an instant success.

FRIENDS AND ENEMIES
Generally friendly and sociable, the Rat is one of the extroverts of the Animal Zodiac. Often, the Rat is lively and genial, and has a special gift for easing the minds of others. It is not surprising that Rats have a lot of friends. They are great speakers and intriguing conversationalists, and can generally find something to say on just about any topic or subject. Of course, there is always that renowned Rat lure that allows them to charm the pants off of people! To the people they love, Rats can be amazingly charitable, popular and supportive, and will go out of their way to be certain their loved ones are content. On the other hand, if the Rat does not like someone, he is considered fair game and can be used to achieve any and all of the Rat's desires. At the end of the day, though, the Rat is a loyal friend and will be there for his companions through thick and thin.

Compatible Friends: Dragons and Monkeys
Mortal Enemy: Horses

RAT PARENTS AND CHILDREN
Rat parents are dedicated to their children. They encompass their little ones with love and attention and enjoy watching their offspring grow and experience the world. When their children are small they brood a great deal over them. Rats become concerned if their babies don't develop as quickly as other children. They anguish over whether or not they are raising their youngsters correctly. With the mental capacity to pick things up easily, Rats tend to get agitated with people who are not quite as quick-witted as they are. No wonder this trait could lead to conflict between Rat parents and their children should any of their children be late bloomers or harbor learning disabilities. Overall, Rats are indulgent parents who don't like denying their youngsters of things they want, and the children soon learn how to wrap their parents around their little fingers.

THE RAT INFANT AND CHILD
Rat babies love to be loved and cuddled. When they are young, Rat babies tend to depend tremendously on their parents, but later in life they develop natural leadership qualities. During their baby years, Rats mature slowly, but gain momentum as they become toddlers. Eventually, they begin to exhibit active mentalities, so, in the early years, plenty of sleep is necessary. In school, the young Rats are eager to learn. It is then, too, that Rats begin collecting things, and like to fill their bedrooms with pebbles, shells and keepsakes of every kind. Generally, young Rats are smart little people who are artistic and literary students. They are well-rounded and many of them do well in sports, too. Being born in the first sign of the Chinese horoscope motivates these children to be pioneers and gives them a need to be first in line.

RAT PARENT/CHILD KINSHIPS
Some parents click immediately with their children and others find they will never have a close relationship no matter how hard they try to make it happen. Following are the compatibility ratings between Rat parents and their children.

Lovers and partners

Rats are beautiful people with magnetic personalities. The Rat himself can't help but notice the admiration he receives from others. If the Chinese say there are few poor Rats, there are an even fewer number who are not sexually stimulating- especially as young people. Rat people are romantic, and are always happier to have someone to share with.

RAT ENRAPTURE
One of the Rat's greatest assets is his charm. Rats can melt hearts with their smiles. Add that to their coquettish personalities and you can easily see how they conquer the hearts of others. And, since Rats love to go out, they have plenty of chances to meet potential suitors or future partners. An annoying quirk of some Rats is they have a difficult time severing ties with former lovers. Obviously, this can pose potential conflicts for the Rat and his new lover and can even endanger his ability to develop new relationships. When the Rat finally settles down with Mr. or Ms. Right, he will find a sincere satisfaction in the intimacy of the partnership.

A RAT'S PARTNER
Although Rats like to be in the driver's seat, they do need partners who can keep up with their active lifestyles. Chinese horoscopes are very specific about which partnerships have the potential to be successful in love and in business. Yet, though destiny can point us in the right direction, we must still make efforts to maintain loving relationships. Following is a brief description of how a Rat will affect a relationship with other Animal signs.

VIRGO RAT
With gifts for research and experimentation and an eye for detail, these Rats have the capability to make small assessments. The hard-working Virgo Rat will find fulfillment in any job where intense investigation is necessary. There is something naive about them that attracts quieter, frailer people as their partners.

PISCEAN RAT
This Rat is delicate and incisive, and does well as a consultant or a counselor. Piscean Rats are creative, but tend to lack the confidence necessary and thus feel a need to be part of a team.

And here we have trip #2 plan...

Here's the thing. If I happened to win the trip to Paris, here's the trip that is already booked that I would mess up in a big way. Just booked these tickets today.

How cool is this?

A military tattoo with Edinburgh Castle as it's backdrop

http://www.edintattoo.co.uk/about-the-tattoo/the-visitor-experience?page=2

We are doing this on our own. The ship offers it as part of an excursion but they don't even leave the ship until 6pm. No way, we'll be trolling around Edinburgh well before that.

Paris a la radio station

I qualified for a three week trip to Paris yesterday through a classical radio station in Toronto. It's the longest "free" trip I've ever heard a radio station give away, and to say that I was blown away when I actually got through is an understatement. The lines are usually clogged with retirees quick with an obsure trivia answer I could never hope to know.

The tide took a turn my way yesterday when I got a question about beer and took a wild stab at an answer that seemed to make sense.

1) I couldn't believe that the phone was actually ringing (it's long distance for me and as a result, often takes too long for me to connect, taking away any chance I have of getting in first.)

2) That he answered and asked me the question.
"What happened to beer in 1935?"
Wild guess answer "They started selling it in cans."

"They did!" He says. "What's your name?"

At this point, I almost pass out from shock. He puts me on hold, telling me to wait two minutes while he finishes out a commercial, after which we will go "live" and I'm to say the answer again.

I managed to find my tongue and make small talk on air before blurting out my answer (secretly hoping that they haven't changed their minds in the time I've been on hold.)

Here's a glimpse at my 1 in 19 shot at Paris. I don't expect to win, but it's nice to have a shot at it. I hope whoever wins appreciates the experience and thinks of it as "once in a lifetime." because it clearly is.

Our Grand Prize package includes an incredible 3 week trip-for-two featuring an in-depth and historic exploration of the “City of Light"; Art, History and French lectures, excursions, walking tours, accommodations, airfare for two, fine food, wine tastings and more.

Let there be Darkness.

Lost both cable and power tonight. Must admit, it freaks me out to be in total darkness like that. Couldn't get to the flashlights and don't light candles for fear that I will accidently knock them over. Longest fifteen minutes EVER. Kudos to the hydro people for reacting quickly and restoring things despite high winds. So glad my old computer is still trudging along. Every time I lose power I wonder if it will find it's way back to the living. She's a goodol' girl Betsy is...

A Winter Salute to the Mighty Falls...

A collection of pictures of Niagara Falls (Canadian side) have been plastered on the news lately thanks to the deep freeze last week. I never get tired of these kinds of photos. She truly is beautiful.

And today I eat radio crow...

got through to one of my favourite stations today for not ONE set of tickets I really wanted, but TWO. I got myself so excited that I didn't LISTEN properly to the question which was as follows.

Which one of the following fights was Muhammud Ali NOT a part of?

1) Rumble in the Jungle
2) Thrilla in Manila or
3) The old geezer match at Caesar's Palace

and I said TWO. Yes, I've officially become one of the old people I like to make fun of on the radio! Of course it was 3, but I was thinking "Which one WAS he a part of? The guy on the line behind me must have been doing a serious happy dance thanks to my incredible stupidity.

Cindy wears the dunce cap for today, and is eating BOTH humble pie and crow for making fun of people who get this kind of thing wrong while in the throngs of competition .

Oh well. Maybe I can get into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with this get up if my radio contest career continues to flounder. Urgh.

An ice rink kind of day...

It isn't often that I ENJOY winter in Ontario, but the last couple of days have featured a warm winter sun coupled with just below freezing temps making it ideal for the kids to skate on various rinks around the city. One such place is a cool coffee pub down by the water that has a little skating surface out back for the kids to test their legs on. (In the summer it doubles as a roller blade rink.) It's so fun watching out the window as kids take their first tenative strides across the ice. The joy on their little faces when they realize that they are actually moving is priceless. It's a new day. The kids think nothing of using little "walkers" to help them out as they learn the ice ropes They push little square frames out in front of them, making them look like miniature 80 year olds. Cutest thing EVER.

I must admit, I get jealous. I always wanted to play woman's ice hockey and I know that I would have learned to skate at a young age but my feet/angles wouldn't allow it. I tried it a few times during school field trips and it was a colassal FAIL. Not enough support in the ankles meant my feet were turning over in the boot, making it impossible to walk, never mind skate.

Alas this was never me...

nor was this...

Oh well, I shall have to be content with the memories of my sister pulling me around the ice in a sled while she did the skating, not a bad way to go either:-)

It's a New Day...

As a few of you know, I had some security issues on my way home from Gatwick airport in London. (My wheelchair set off the alarms for traces of "kit" and a report was made ("Kit" is a word for explosive) . I was concerned about what this could mean for my 2012 travel plans (ie issues with my passport) so when I found Gatwick airport on Facebook, I posted about my experience and asked them who I needed to speak with to find out what steps (if any) I needed to take next.

I was truly shocked when they actually got back to me with a security reps email address and asked me to contact her to "sort things out." Low and behold, doesn't the head of security email me today telling me that "all paperwork regarding this incident has been shredded and you needn't worry about anything concerning your Olympic travel plans." I couldn't believe it. Talk about service, Impressive.. If this had happened in Toronto, I would still be trying to figure out who to contact and they'd be telling me I had to do so in person.

Gatwick Airport was a total mess as it underwent extensive renovations during our trip, but look at it now. They set up a "snow hill" to raise money for two local charities over the holidays. Yeah, Toronto wouldn't be doing this either. Watching this, I remembered why I loved the UK so much, the "small town" feel, present even at an international airport.

Yes, I opened my big mouth...

And now we have a snowstorm descending upon us on Friday. Yup. Like I couldn't see this one coming...

Mom's back on Saturday. She'll likely see the ground and demand to turn around. On second thought, probably not. Girl likes the snow and has been talking about skiing lately...so, it's probably her fault! :-)

Tuesday, 10 January 2012

Flying High.

Well, Mom finally got a chance to parasail today. She's been wanting to try it for as long as I can remember. Here's a video explaining exactly what it is. She isn't in Key West, but I bet the waters of the Carribean looked something like this....

She said that it was very relaxing and "not scary at all." I suspect this is her way of telling me I will be trying it next. (There was mention of us trying something like this when we are in Dover this summer.)

All this while I take in her deliveries at my place. (Today it was some water goblets she had replaced by the company after some paint peeled right off of their stems on their first go around.) Yes, the deliveryman is my new best friend as I try to keep from talking to myself too much.

Glad she is having fun, now if I could only get the sunny/warm conditions in this vid, to show up around here. I guess I should be grateful that there isn't three feet of snow on the ground. (No Mother Nature, that is not your cue to bring on the white stuff. :-))

Table for One.

Well, Mom is enjoying the rays on a Carribean beach this week thanks to a last-minute deal at a swanky timeshare. A friend of hers owns one and needed to use it or lose it for a week so off they went. I could have gone with, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy the beach for a whole week before I got bored and wanted to head out for some island action. I would want to be at the pool/go exploring/go to town, where Mom just wants to veg out with a book and when you can't strike out on your own, the able-bodied traveler rules, so yeah, better that I'm here and she's there.

It will be strange without my coffee buddy for a week though. Very isolating for me seeing as for the most part, both of us go on outings together thanks to radio wins and the fact is, for the most part, I think we truly do enjoy the same things and each other's company.

I just ate chips and dip for dinner. Let's hope my menu for one improves over the week or she is going to need to roll me out of here when she gets back!

The Home Cook Makes an Appearance...

Cooking spaghetti and meatballs in the slow cooker and it's starting to smell soooo good in here but I started it late so it looks like a 10pm eating time. Not great, but if the scent is an indication it will be worth it! It's soooo frigging cold in my bedroom I may be sleeping on the chair in my living room! I so need a steaming, hot plate of good ol' pasta.

My meatballs won't come out looking this good. I always squish them trying to lift them out of the pot.

ETA: Pretty good, though I did end up squishing most of the meatballs :-(

Christmas in Reverse...

Okay, finally got the photos working on Mom's end! Yay! to her for finally figuring it out. So first off, let's start with the chocolates we made out of chocolate molds. Admittedly, this is like the third batch, so they look MUCH better than batch one and Mom handled this task on her own so I take NO credit...

Not perfect, but not bad for a first try!

Next, we have Mom's Dickon's village. No clue why we have no pics of this all lit up, but I'm guessing the lights make it harder to see the village as a whole so here we are...

Nice, but does look better lit up, and I prefer it on a countertop instead of on the floor under a window, but that aside it's a very extensive/pretty town, and we got a few deals at the end of the season, so will be adding a few new details next year...

Each year, this German winemaker comes out with a "winter scene" bottle for the holidays. Mom was getting quite a collection and didn't know what to do with them all, so she stuck lights in/around them and came up with this display. Have to say, it was a fav of mine this year.

I'll spare you the Christmas morning pics of each of us, let's just say "not pretty" and move on.

The strawberries and waffles for breakfast were top notch.

They looked something like this...

Only they are missing the candy cane ice-cream that was served a la mode LOL. Yes, we like our sweets!!

It was a quiet morning for the 2 of us, but I think we both enjoyed it. The present that mattered most to me was adopting a polar bear through WWF. Of course, you never truly "adopt" a wild animal, but I like knowing that the donation is helping to preserve his home.

I always miss my kids a little more at xmas because a) It was Kasey's birthday and b) They both loved opening presents. I always loved picking stuff out for them and watching them play with it (or not) on the big day. So, there is forever a void there now, and I miss them terribly.

Mom was off to my aunt's in the afternoon, but not before I scored steak on the bbq and mashed pototoes as my own dinner to enjoy in front of a wide variety of Christmas specials, followed by some seriously good popcorn.

I also managed to finish off a book (the Night Circus) which was frankly, just plain weird!

Anyway, it's nice to get the pics back on track and I'll spare you the Christmas Eve "dinner in a hotel lobby" story because really, it's nothing but sad..lol!

Merry Christmas Readers!

Okay, okay, here's the morning pics..My eye looks sooo bad!

Real winter finally makes an appearance...

Supposed to be -14 today with high winds and snow. I've been wondering where the "real" winter is. So far, I've been roaming the streets in my running shoes and turning my back on my "true" winter coat. Very "un-Canadian" this time of year. The good news is, it's already January so we only have about 2 1/2 more months of cold, blustery, "please send me a plane ticket to California" weather to go!
